The first segment of today's show is titled "American Military, American Virtue" and President President Theodore Roosevelt's relationship and history with the military.
Dr. Matthew Oyos, Professor of History at Radford University reports on President Roosevelt's efforts to change the Army's personnel system to a merit-based officer promotion system.
He states that President Roosevelt "sees military officers as upholding that kind of (frontier) American virtue," and that it is a question of character; he sees them "military officers" as having the kind of character that he wants all Americans to emulate.
Professor Oyos also discusses some of President Roosevelt's disappointments, to include accepting the Army Inspector General's recommendation to discharge without honor 167 African American soldiers of the 25th Infantry Regiment after the 1906 Brownsville racial incident.
