Providence Passes Law Which Stops Police From Conducting Proactive Law Enforcement

I was a cop for 27 years. I retired because of the ability of officers to investigate a crime and question people was getting reduced. I maintain that for us to live in the community of lower crime rates we should be prepared for some inconveniences. How many times in the past has an officer stopped someone who had just committed a crime and did a field interview and find out later that he had stopped the suspect and from that had information on the suspect that was passed on to the investigators? I know that I had several cases cleared by arrest that way as well as other investigators.

I'm a card carrying conservative Libertarian who is all for personal responsibility. So I read this story with an open mind.

So I have to ask you, why do you feel police accountability is a bad thing? Why is stopping racial profiling a bad thing? Why is being able to photograph/record police a bad thing? The police often say "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear." I feel the same can be applied to them, not just everyone else.

The one part I disagree with is, I believe police SHOULD have the right to ask about a person's immigration status if they appear to be a foreign national. I.e., such as speaking broken English as just one example. I'm not saying that all Hispanics (as an example) should be targeted, but people who speak very limited or no English should be asked about their status in the US.

Playing stupid games...unfortunately the city council will be winning a lot of stupid prizes. I honestly hope there isn't a murder due to these idiotic policies.
