Dr Hayes seems to be describing what can be termed as Emotional Intellegence, when we become aware of our feelings and the feelings of others. He points out that giving of ourselves frees us from our emotional hang ups. Our attitude in life contributes to whether we are successful or fail. According to Frankl, "We can discover this meaning in life in three different ways: (1) by creating a work or doing a deed; (2) by experiencing something or encountering someone; and (3) by the attitude we take toward unavoidable suffering" and that "everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances".

Humans are meaning making machines and Dr. Hayes is expanding on the meaning making process Frankl discovered during his time in a concentration camp. pain is unavoidable in life, it happens to us all. When we add in our attitude, judgment, comparison, and problem solving our pain becomes unacceptable to us and we suffer.

be present...open up...do what matters = psychological flexibility
learning to experience the pain of presence while at the same time enduring the pain of absence makes us better
Dr. Hayes would say take what is helpful and leave the rest.
