I was interested to learn that US territory Puerto Rico will hold a referendum vote to determine if the island will become independent, or make a request to Congress to become America’s next state.
During the Spanish American War the USA fought to liberate this island nation. In every war since, Puerto Rico has sent soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen to fight alongside their fellow American soldiers of the USA armed forces. Many died or were wounded in combat.
I pray for wisdom for the people of Puerto Rico in this upcoming vote.

Puerto Rico, a US territory, will hold a referendum vote to determine if the island will become independent, or make a request to Congress to become America’s next state.

Carlos Mercader, the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, said the people of Puerto Rico will make a historical decision, because Puerto Rico has been in a state of limbo.

“Puerto Rico has been a US territory now for 117 years. We are trying to define finally what is going to be the future political status of the island. Right now, as it is, and as we’ve seen through past several years the relationship with Congress and the Supreme Court has said that we are a territory, we are a colony, and we want to decolonize the island,” Mercader said.

Mercader said that while Puerto Ricans are born US citizens and go to war under the US flag, they cannot vote for the president or for a representative in Washington, D.C.

Mercader said the most important part of democracy is the will of the people, so if the vote favors statehood, he hopes Congress will honor this request, and make Puerto Rico our 51st state."
