You would be surprised at how many medals get lost over the years. I read an article yesterday in the issue of VFW Magazine (or was it Legion Magazine?) about returning lost, misplaced, or stolen medals to veterans or their descendants. WW1, WW2, Korean, Vietnam, etc., medals returned to descendants. Some of these medals were found in antique furniture, thrift stores, being traded, etc.
As an aside, i was doing some research on my Dad's brother, who served as an Aviation Radioman aboard the Navy version of the B-24 Liberator bomber. He was declared MIA and presumed KIA in 1944 when the aircraft went missing over the English Channel. He received the Air Medal, which I now have. The pilot (and the rest of the crew) also received the Air Medal. I found a couple of years ago that the pilot's Air Medal was being traded on the Internet and was in the possession of someone who collected medals. To say I was surprised would be an understatement.
Anyway, look up "Purple Hearts Reunited" for more info on returning these medals.

The owner probably either forgot about long ago, or has since past.
