For those of us who served during the cold war period, this type of thing just elicits a big shrug and yawn. It happended all the time, by both sides. I guess because it stopped for a while and now is starting back up it seems like news, but all during the cold war it was just business as usual.

SSG Carlos Madden - Pretty frequently. They even approached California last year, iirc. Note that they never enter the airspace in question -- they just approach it in order to make the statement and trigger the intercept. We used to do it to them all the time, too, and probably still do.
