Can you believe it was 35 years ago when Bill Murray and the late Harold Ramis and John Candy stepped onto the silver screen and into Army life with the making of the comedy film "Stripes."
I had "migrated" to the Army Reserve and was an infantry company commander when the movie was released June 26, 1981. We were at our two week annual training when the 1SG and I during "middle weekend" packed a couple of duce and half's with our guys to go to a local drive-in to watch it. It was a rowdy and fun time with the week after the viewing, all my platoons had a Razzle Dazzle competition.
Fort Knox will host a July 8 anniversary dinner at the Saber and Quill and show the movie at Waybur Theater to commemorate the occasion in which the military base and the nearby communities took part in the making of the popular comedy.
Anyone in Hardin County who had a part in the film and has memories and stories to share about their experiences while "Stripes" was being made is encouraged to share those by sending an email to the public affairs office - [login to see] <mailto: [login to see] > .

Love this movie. Went to basic at Ft. Knox in 1990 in the exact same buildings. Same building with the unit crests on the walls and the same pay phones out in front of the mini PX. I think it is all gone now. but great times.

Same here; I went there for OSUT in Jan 81. I just missed them. When I saw the movie, I thought Holy $#!T, I was just there. Hard to believe it's been that long. Sure do miss it.
