I have had my butt hanging in the breeze in that neck of the woods with only a satellite phone and a beacon in the event things went sideways.
The thought that the US would through paralysis and unwillingness leave men to die and then lie about it afterwards hits me in a dark place.
Anyone that says that we couldn't do something about the outcome is a liar. There is an abundance of assets in Africa, the Med, and in Europe that were in range to make a difference and they did not because no one with authority would commit the forces.
These men are heroes, and should be treated as such.

A similar event that no one seems to bring up or speak about is the 1983 bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. In this event 241 died.

A separate event not as similar was but similar poor ending the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia October 3-4, 1993. 19 Americans dead, 73 wounded (numbers do not include allies or civilian casualties/wounded) in a mission that was supposed to take one-hour.

Note there is no political prospective in any of this. If you looked further back you could find too many examples of questionable calls, leadership, support, etc. that led to the deaths of Americans (as service members and not) in all parts of the globe to include Stateside.

Note, important note, here comes the political prospective. It is unfortunate to use one tragedy as a political weapon without acknowledging the others and seeing where the similarities lie.

Thanks for reminding us. Reagan chickened out after the Lebanon bombing. I knew a SSG in 2008 who was a young USMC private in the basement of the adjacent building when the attack happened. In 2008 he was in the USAR as a civil affairs NCO.
