Well I am not sure I buy into that point of view. Morals are enforced by religion and religious laws but most are set by society from what I remember being taught. Typically as morals evolve, our religions make changes (subtle or major) and there is usually a lag of years or centuries in some cases. Now some would argue that morals were instilled by God, However, I think that might also be a little askew because morals are taught not genetic or instinctive at birth. Now it is true that some societies can take more than one misguided moral turn and make something moral that probably should not be........eventaully they either learn from the mistake or the mistake unravels the society slowly until it is destroyed and a new or revised moral code has to be developed. So onto the subject matter. Religion and religious belief can play a role in reducing suicide but the question in my mind is the religious belief or religion eventually trumped by what society believes? In my mind that is the $64,000.00 question. So in the Catholic Religion, suicide is still the expressway to hell. However society is now saying that some forms of suicide are acceptable such as euthanasia and some sectors of the Catholic Church seem to be starting to embrace that point of view. I personally think suicide is morally wrong because the arguments for euthenasia are not all medically proven. For example, it is argued that euthenasia is done to reduce suffering but medically we really have no real clue how much someone is suffering external to their nervous system. On the other hand I don't believe that everyone that commits suicide is automatically going to hell either. I think the truth is probably somewhere in between and has to deal with the circumstances of the suicide and decision process.
Bottom line here is I think is more society than religion or lack of religion that is the real issue here.
