it will, in the long run, force US to start producing... here again... and be less of a consumer nation and a producer nation once again...

The thing about trade is yes we will produce again, but you will not be able to purchase as much of what is produced, which in real experience means America is worse off after trade wars and people are poorer. Don't fall into the protectionist mindset free trade is much better economically for our country than tariffs.

Painful over the short term, potentially helpful over the long term. Threatening a trade war and then making good on that threat, would likely put us in a better position when it comes to negotiations with other countries.

The last trade war caused may a massive raise in tariffs by a major economy was called the "Great Depression". You also have to belive that Trump is willing to Kill some of His own businesses and his daughters.

If Trump starts a trade war with either China or Mexico it will be felt quickly and sharply by almost every american. Could possibly be the worst thing any president could ever do.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - The great Depression wasn't caused by high tariffs. When the Great Depression hit, Republicans at the time thought raising tariffs further would be a good idea, all it did at that point was exacerbate an already bad situation. Too much of anything, is a bad thing. The Great Depression was caused by a huge drop in aggregate expenditures, there was a huge excess of labor and low demand, that created a feedback loop. Less demand meant less jobs, less jobs meant less demand, banks and businesses were folding left and right.

SSG (Join to see) - And that is the process that Trump brags he is going to start, Economists differ on whether Smoot-Hawley caused the depression itself or turned a recession into the disaster. That is a distinction that makes very little difference
