@LTC Michael Martin I would understand bullet proof vests. Being that the IRS is more hated than dentists and lawyers combined, I could understand wanting to protect their employees. I don't understand the need for all the weapons though. If they need to make an arrest that involves that kind of firepower, then they should bring in the Marshal Service or the FBI to effect the arrest, then take over for the prosecution.

LTC Michael Martin - Interesting read. Maybe instead of buying more firearms for internal use, some of these agencies should work cooperatively instead of just buying more weapons.

I don't understand why we have so many armed Federal agencies, and they seem to overlap in jurisdictions. ATF DEA DOJ IRS, they seem to have small armies at their disposal, why?

MSG Stan Hutchison - The Federal Govt does not need a domestic Army especially when the agencies are over lapping

SFC Sczymanski J. - I am not defending any of them, I am only trying to understand why they have reached this point.
The public demands security, law & order. These agencies are there to provide that. IMO, it started with the Patriotic Act, a very poorly constructed bill, without much debate on the future impact of that bill.

A big reason is that the Federal Government is not one homogeneous organization, it is a bunch of little fiefdoms fighting for power and money. Heck the department of education has an Inspector Generals office with armed federal agents to track fraud in government grants and such.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Yup, the postal SWAT team is read and armed in their MRAP and full tactical gear. You never know when some criminal will post a letter without postage.
