I don't have a problem with buying this type of food with food stamps. First, once the money is spent, it is spent. Whatever they buy doesn't influence how much money they get. Second, and more importantly, I'd rather someone buy healthy food rather than the cheap crap that the poor normally have to buy. That's why so many poor people have such bad health (obesity, diabetes, etc.)...they eat unhealthy food. Did you ever notice that places like Whole Foods (i.e. "Whole Paycheck") have the healthiest and most expensive foods? Good food costs money. So, if they'd rather use their limited money on a good piece of beef or seafood, rather than crappy hamburger meat and fish sticks, then I'm fine with that. However, once it's used, don't reach back out for more.

I'm personally more concerned about it being used at convenience stores for sodas/candy and other junk. There has to be limits.

Soda and candy is usually relatively inexpensive though. And on the flip side of it, I'd lose my mind if all I ate was beans and rice because it's all I was even allowed to buy. I like to eat generally healthy, but I like a Coke or a Milky Way once in a while too.

My family eats very healthy and well on about 400 a month (with my favorite ice cream and some extra junk for me) this never includes lobster or any expensive steak regardless of sales. We save and cut back if we want those items because they are not necessary to our overall health. If you need food stamps, you should probably make a shopping list and evaluate it based on need vs want.

I think that most people do make a shopping list, the food stamps are a supplement to most incomes. Living costs for a family now a days run high in most areas. I agree that a budget is definitely needed in today's economic times, but the sad reality is some families can't afford $200 to spend on food. I hope that these families would be afforded opportunities to increase their income, but many cannot. I would also say that junk food items shouldn't be a part of most diets and some dietary education is needed to help people learn to eat healthier.
Thank you all, for taking the time to reply to this article I posted. I appreciate the difference in opinion and I hope that we can continue to serve our country in which ever way we can.
