Rescued sailors make it ashore after five-month ordeal

Having read through this story, does it seem like something is off? They ran into multiple places they could have made landfall. They didn't activate an emergency beacon because they weren't in immediate danger and yet one of them days she didn't think they'd make it another day. Something fishy here.
