I saw this when it first came out. The challenge I had with it is the likelihood that on the first go at locating the former kings body they guessed 100% correct on everything, dug in the exact right spot and bingo, found what they were looking for. It seemed incredible to me that they were able do this.

Yeah, well, sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't...the Force was probably with them, incidentally, that last bit was from a Dustin Hoffman flick with Chief Dan George, who was also in He Outlaw Josey Wales, the flick was a western from the late 60s or early 70s called Little Big Man...I always love that line...anyway, I kind of agree with you, obviously, I agree it does seem more than a trifle astonishing...I just esp liked the characterization of him apparently being the exact personality opposite of the Shakespearean character stereotype, you know?

I am like CPT Goodman. I read everything about this archaeological discovery. I don't however agree that this discovery was fortuitous to the point of incredulity. Richard III was a King of England and despite his bad reputation and the relative shortness of his reign, his passing would be a matter of great comment. Enough was written about his death and burial location (in a great many disparate narritives) that a compilation of the majority could be expected to give a high probability of success. Then there is the damage to the corpse's body combined with his physical anomalies and the DNA match make his identity incontrovertible.

The study of ancient DNA requires special facilities, and we travelled to two world-leading laboratories specialising in the study of ancient DNA, to analyse our results.

I believe that there was an article in my Archaeology magazine awhile back on the same thing.
