It was a Wednesday. I remember it well. I was with my daughter and her Sea Scout group at Dana Point when the riots began. Parents began calling asking for us to send their children home and told us what was happening. In the days that followed we witnessed lawlessness bred of lawlessness. Why did we ever stop teaching civics in school? Why don't we invest in our police for better training? How can we survive as a free nation when people don't understand the connection between Rights and Responsibilities?

On the East Coast I remember blackouts in NYC and the looting that broke out. These are reminders of what the world is like when order breaks down. Zombie apocalypses have become main stream because they depict the mindless actions of those who lose their humanity and any sense of empathy for fellow beings.

The first few days the Los Angeles sheriffs were held back by then Chief Gates LAPD and we could only respond to sheriffs territory. After the Sherriff (Block) put his foot down we went into LAPD areas and we started gaining control again. Yes it looked like a war zone and lawns flooded with old TVs furniture, stereos, etc. A lot of people went shopping and tossed out the old stuff into the streets and on curbs. I was due to go on vacation the day they broke out, so much for that.

I was there in riot gear and all, brought many flashbacks of the corps days.

I was living and working in Singapore when all of that happened. I took a break and flew to Bali, Indonesia to chill. All the locals were asking me details about Rodney King and the riots. I told them that, before I went to SE Asia, I was living 3,000 miles away from Los Angeles. They were incredulous, and maybe thought I was hiding something. I learned more about it during the recently broadcast documentaries than I knew then.
