Been dealing with riptides since I was a beach lifeguard in Connecticut in the 60s. Even where I live now on the Florida Gulf coast there are constantly reports of people getting caught in riptides. If you're going to swim in salt water anywhere in the world you need to be able to overcome a riptide. Just remember, swim parallel to shore until current no longer carrying you.
