In 1923, when Monroe was 8 years old, an all-white mob burned the town to the ground. They killed six people, maybe more. He escaped with a group of women and children on an unusually cold night, wading through a swamp before boarding a train that took them to a safer place.

He was fortunate to have escaped. In 1966 six black teenagers decided to beat up this writer. They hit me several times. An elderly black lady came running out of her apartment and said: "leave that white boy alone". I had no hatred towards blacks then; nor do I now. One should not be prejudice to many because of the actions of a few. I believe all men and women are basically decent human beings. We should respect our fellow humans; period.
