Sir this is probably one of the few times I will disagree with you, I do not think we have more similarities with Russians than the UK. I dated a young lady while living in Germany that was fun and intriguing but definitely different than our British relatives. I think some of it is the Slavic culture and some living under communism for 100years changes people, least to forget the Nazi invasion.

Fair enough. We can agree to disagree respectfully. Maybe some of the clowns who never learned how to do anything respectfully can learn from us...

When I was doing the research for my novel on the Russian Revolution, I dove very deep into Russian history and culture. I won't lie Jack...they are a fascinating people with a rich heritage; well worth admiring in many aspects. How can any warrior not admire Tsar Alexander's leadership against Napoleon...or Peter the Great; a Tsar who spent a few years personally working in Dutch shipyards just to better understand modern naval architecture? Even the Soviets were undeniably some of the bravest soldiers in history against the Nazis. I challenge any young, single man to read the letters and journals written by Tsar Nicholas's four daughters and not fall in love with ghosts.
Still, the same could be said for the Germans, the Japanese and dare I say...much of the Islamic world. Great societies bring forth great persons...some great and good, others great and terrible.
I too hope and pray that our two nations can reconcile more fully; together, we'd form one heck of a vise grip on rouge states and radical regimes. Our combined military strength could all but ensure no competing power would dare launch an unprovoked attack on either of us. We do share a great deal in common and have a lot to offer one another despite our marked differences.
Unfortunately, I believe that the economic, political and ideological landscape dictates that we'll always be at best...wary of each other.

Allegiance to Putin? Whomever might you be talking about? Not me. I'm talking about people, ordinary people. As I said, it will take generations (if ever) for the Russians to change their fundamental attitudes. However, I still believe they, like Americans, are romantics and that one simple point might be used to build a relationship upon over time (albeit a very long time)
