Why hasn't he applied for and earned his citizenship? Those who come into the US legally and enlist tend to go to the top of the list and typically manage to earn citizenship in a few short years.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs
Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin I think that is a valid point. I got at least two of my soldiers their citizenship while deployed!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - I've assisted one of my Airmen years back in going through the process as well. Once my Afghan interpreter gained his Visa, I also encouraged him to consider the military if he wants to speed up his quest to become a citizen.
The Veteran in this article makes no sense. He's here legally, so he's already in the system. If he wants to avoid deportation as a Veteran, he needs to apply for citizenship. If he has a troubled past, I don't feel sorry for him if he's denied and in turn deported.

While he was active duty he should have applied to be a citizen. My best friend is from TRINIDAD....he is a retired Colonel...while active duty he became a citizen....as for this guys "checkered record" I'm not sure what makes it checkered, but he should have not done what ever he's done to make it checkered, so this is on him. If he doesn't bother to apply, how will he ever know if he will be accepted and become a citizen?

Too bad we don't know the reasons for his exit from the Marines. I think that could shed some light on the citizenship question. Checkered past outside of felonies and some misdemeanors may slow it down, but shouldn't get him deported. If I remember correctly, the Resident Alien card has to be renewed either every 5-10 years (Been awhile, Wife became a citizen a decade ago). So if his checkered past is that bad, it won't be to long before he may possibly be deported anyway.
