It is possible, actually easy, to buy a charge-only cable. While the ends contain all the fittings for USB attachment, only the ones involved with delivery of electrical power are connected. They cannot be used to transmit data.
(Known because I bought one, and tried to use it to sync files between my computer and phone. Didn't work, and I thought my comp or phone had gone bloooey until I tried another cable.)
