Not really. We gave tons of Shermans to the Russians. Contrary to popular belief, the Russians did not have millions of T-34's until 1944. So although the M-4 was ineffective against the majority of German armor (in our experience/use), it was better than the majority of what they had. Taking a queue from the British ("Firefly"), the Russians up-gunned their Shermans and then in late '44-ish, got the official American modification which was the long barreled 76mm gun. Duece and a half trucks, Jeeps and Shermans made up quite a lot of Russian army strength.

Once effective Soviet designs reached the front in numbers, the Sherman was relegated to recce much like we used our light Stuart tanks. The Sherman excelled in that on the Eastern front due to its killer range and speed. And of course a 75mm gun trumps a 37mm gun any day...
