Preparing for the next war will never go completely as planned. The challenge can be lack of requisite technology or a faulty doctrine. Two doctrines in WWII cost us many lives: 1. Planners thought strategic bombers did not need fighter escorts. 2. US tanks were tethered and supported infantry units. Patton changed that as he used tanks as battering rams which facilitated the movement of his 3d Army in record time.

SSG Robert Mark Odom - The Germans were so ready for WWII because they did a military wide AAR of WWI and developed the technology and doctrine to not replicate WWI results.
The definition of Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) is a doctrine or technology that will give the edge to a military. I believe that the RMA for the next peer military enemy will be hypersonic missiles, rail guns, lasers, and active defenses to various weapons threats. If we are the only country to have a bomb that are filled with smart cluster bombs that can take out 40 mechanized vehicles at one time, it will definitely be a RMA.
The RMAs for WWII were:
Germans: Blitzkrieg, tanks, mechanized infantry, combined arms attacks.
US: P-51s, amphibious landings, air craft carriers, and strategic bombings when the bombers are escorted. Patton using tanks as a battering ram.

SSG Robert Mark Odom - There is a lot of relevance in military history. This point is a little quirky but I enjoy it. The country of Russia and her winters were devastating to Hitler and Napoleon, so I asked myself why would the Mongols succeed in Russia even in the winter time. One day I kicked the right rock and the answer was given to me. The Mongol horses knew how to break the ice for fodder to feed themselves. Each Mongol warrior had about 4 horses to carry his supplies, and Mongol warriors drank horse blood and made horse cheese to supplement their diets.
