They haven't already? They had female astronauts in the sixties.

We have women fighter pilots who have served in combat roles.

Actually they do have a few female fighter pilot but it looks like they are going to actively recruit women for the role now. I saw a documentary on NPR about a woman who flew the MiG-29.
