Honestly, I don't think we ever really needed them. I think their rockets could carry more payload and they had a few other advantages but no real technical advantage that advanced the program that we would miss. I think adding them in the first place to the international space station was just a symbolic move.

Anyone's guess. We knows how mean they can be - but maybe it isn't worth the effort to cause problems on their way out. Too bad Astronauts can not be exempt from political complications.

CW4 Guy Butler - I think for now they are going to just walk and insist nobody use the modules in space vs taking them off the station. Removing the modules and bringing them back to Earth is too permanent a move to make in what I suspect is a largely political decision. They backed away quickly from the whole leave the American astronaut in Space vs bringing him back to Earth after someone explained to them that doing that would slam the door on cooperation of other countries like India and China and not just impact the United States willingness to partner.
