Besides the hack and dox effort we recently saw in the election, both China and Russia have been hacking us for years. So have the Israelis and a few others. It's so much easier than the former methods that involved placing or recruiting collectors inside our country and can yield unlimited resources depending on which system they can penetrate. China has been stealing our technology for many years. Just look at their new stealth fighter and compare it to our F-35. They are almost identical and that's because they stole our technology. It sure saves a lot of R&D costs when you can just steal it. Before they caught them, a Chinese couple in CA had gotten all sorts of things including some very guarded stuff on our submarines. It's serious business and a new form of warfare that needs to be taken very seriously. Maybe this election will wake folks up. I'm not saying that US hasn't done anything to counter it, just that we need to more aware of it and perhaps do more. Thanks for sharing.

Completely agree. I don't know why people perceive us (our own people) as being impenetrable to cyber attacks. What, just because we have MIT recruits working in NSA, etc. they think we're unable to be hacked? We have a lot of really smart people, but so do they, and we are actually behind in the technology sector when it comes to computers and software. China has been a leader forever. Maybe instead of our Presidents chipping away at our education funding, they should be investing more so our future will be more secure, as when it comes to science, math, and technology, we are inferior to China and several other countries. Maybe we should think about that! And how do we know it was ACTUALLY China and Russia? Just because the code was in those languages. Come on guys, especially my intel people, you know better than that, and to assume.

I'm not IT guy but I know that a teenager can find "hacks" to most anything just by spending a little time on the right websites. I believe a teenager broke into DOD many years ago. If they can make their activity appear to come from elsewhere by bouncing it around servers all over the world, then I'd think one could make the "fingerprints" look most any way they want to. I don't know who is behind all the recent activity but I'm not convinced anyone else does either. The agencies will most likely say whatever the folks above them tell them to say. Unless I physically see the proof and am able to understand it, I'm at the mercy of what I'm given. You are correct about China's leadership, at least at face value. I have looked at the ongoing contest over supercomputers and the lead does change, but often China has one or two faster than us. There are some being designed or in use that make a Cray look like a laptop. They are smarter with their spending plus we finance their R&D through their hacking. Their less-capitalist model focuses on the end product vice corporate profits. They've gotten a taste of capitalism so that may shift but it would take a major political shift first.
