Sacred Cows Die As Marine Commandant Changes Course On Amphibs

Sounds like an interesting change. I admit I am not up on the latest in amphib stuff, but it does seem like there has been a move to get pieces into place to fulfill a change (although not all of them are done, some even dead). Specifically, LR 5" ammo, sea basing, and others. My thought was the amphib way of doing biz was a slow way to get a lot of people hurt or killed. Now, that we have spent almost 20+ years getting Marines to war by air, how many senior leadership (O and E) even really know how to do amphi ops? Prob not many. Also, with our enemies spending a lot of money on upgraded SSM tech, make amphib stuff more dangerous, unless farther off shore.

Speaking of revolutionary thoughts... how long before we really don't need a Navy (at least not a blue water one) at all? When you think about emerging technologies and probable conflicts (even conventional ones)... is the aircraft carrier the capital ship, or would long-range, high-efficiency flying "mother ships" equipped with armed drones replace it? Are we moving beyond the nuclear age? Will SSBNs and ICBMs be replaced by high-impact, low casualty cyber-attacks on infrastructure? Is special operations gradually becoming the "standard" for all ground-based direct action combat? Will we arrive at a time and place when 1% or less of the Armed Forces will in any capacity "fight"... with the other 99% providing support only? Heresy I know... but who can tell?
