Twice the article talks about access to firearms an also the one report regarding wanting to raise the age to 25 for military members to purchase firearms at a base exchange. These same individuals can purchase a firearm legally off-base.
The biggest take from this and another article I read this morning is the poor mental health and suicide prevention efforts and care in the US military.

There are so many ways to treat depression and right now it feels like the military isn't using any of them. They are just putting people into what is essentially "casual status" awaiting decisions about discharge and expecting things to go well.

Today's young are not ready for military life. Retake a test you fail, everyone gets a trophy, don't keep score, anytime you do something wrong-just apologize, restorative justice, etc. It really must be frustrating to be recruiter now days.

It is very difficult to be a recruiter. That said, people are a precious resource and once we get them, we are not doing a very good job of taking care of them
