When I took my gun safety course to get my carry permit, they said don’t let an assailant get within 10’ or you lose. Good advice if a person comes at you with any cutting weapon.

I follow...I'm afraid I know little or nothing about those aspects, though I follow your point, of course...purely for exercise, I'd started doing iaido, often taught with aikido, which I've also done for a long time till I tore my right rotator cuff, which uses either wooden or mock metal swords to practice, I've only used the wood...the real swords do actually exist, though they're specially licensed only for those at serious expert level in iaido, obv....
