When I was growing up in an all-white small town in southern Wisconsin in the 50's and 60's, I was an enthusiastic baseball player and soaked up everything I could on the subject. One of the books I found was Satchel Paige's autobiography, which was a revelation to me about Negro League baseball and how the players were treated back then. I also learned about several great players that were anonymous to anybody but Negro League enthusiasts. I remember reading Satchel Paige's "rules" for getting ahead in life and remember one in particular: Never look back - something might be gaining on you. There were dietary rules also. Mr. Paige and his ghost writer had a humorous way of explaining things. Great player - he pitched in the era when the starting pitcher was expected to finish the game - relievers were just burned-out starters (or unsuccessful ones). It would be interesting to see how Mr. Paige would fare in MLB today, in the era of pitcher specialization and situational pitching.

He was a great player but I never got to see him play. Everyone knows his name.
