When Saudi Arabia's spokesman said this he also stressed that he is conveying "Saudi's decision only" implying that Riyadh will be following the U.S. lead when it comes to ground operations against ISIS in Syria. If Saudi Arabia and Bahrain send ground troops to Syria this may lead to an open confrontation between them and Iranian troops leading to an escalation between the two. The current diplomatic relations between the two is very strained due to Saudi Arabia's execution of a Shiite Cleric names Nimr al-Nimr and the burning/looting of the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

This will prove interesting to see how Saudi Arabia's national guard forces actually perform against ISIL which is also a sunni doctrine organization CPT (Join to see). The National Guard is the name of the Saudi ground forces.
I concur with the authors of the article that if and when Saudi and Bahrain ground forces come into contact with Shia ground forces from Iran there may well be an exchange of fire against each other instead of against ISIL and its cohorts of terror.
