Back when I went through TAP, it was admittedly a joke.

I mean, they brought in some guy from Brooks Bros. to teach us how to wear a suit (preferably one they sold). Some good resume advice, but no real in-depth analysis of skills, or assistance in translating them to a realistic job goal.

The whole thing was like, "ok, now that you're getting out...we're going to take a couple of days to make sure we can legally state we helped you to transition."

For reservists coming off MOB...not much more than a kick in the seat of the pants as you swung by admin to pick up your DD-214.

TAP needs to start the day you enter the service. The Navy (and other services) should ensure that certifications and qualifications are equal ON PAPER to civilian standards and therefore marketable. Leaders should be given resources to effectively mentor members towards possible future career choices, and retention climate should be one that favors (and for the love of Pete...HELPS) those with a consistent desire to "stay", while making it "OK" to be planning ahead if you don't.

One better? Work with public and private sector entities to recruit for federal law enforcement, park service, oil and gas, heavy industry, etc.

I also received resistance for 2-day workshops. Few knew about them and a few simply assumed I was lying.

If you have that issue, check out the TGPS courses on JKO.
