Actually, it's the article and it's presumptions that are pure bullshit. The ITINs are issued to people who are not eligible to receive a social security number, not to illegal immigrants, as the article claims. And the child that triggers the benefit must have a social security number. So as usual, it's just right wing propaganda to get the base stirred up over a falsehood and demonize immigrants some more. And by the initial responses on this thread, it worked.

If one is illegal but has US citizen kids, the kids will have a SSN, and if the illegal person has been approved for special consideration, they may also be issued a SSN. Illegals, as well as non-immigrants (students, family members of dignitaries, and others) , are able to work in the US in many cases, and are either issued a SSN or Tax ID so they can pay taxes on their US earned income.
As far as income tax returns, I don't what they can claim or not claim, or what refunds they get or not get.
