GRAND FORKS, N.D. — U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says Grand Forks Air Force Base is one of five bases being considered for the new KC-46 air refueling tanker.
Hoeven says Grand Forks is on the short list along with Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington, Travis Air Force Base in California and Joint Base McGuire-Dix in New Jersey.
He says the Air Force expects to announce its preferred base next winter.
The Grand Forks base was home to KC-135 tankers for 50 years before losing the mission during a round of military base closings and realignments. The last of those tankers left the base in 2010. The base is now home to a drone mission.

I'd love to see the tankers come back. Why they were ever pulled and sent down to Kansas made no sense to me, other than the AF doesn't care for cold weather bases. When I arrived at the Forks in June 01, we had 57 135's.

Would be great to see Grand Forks get tankers again. The base itself seems really quiet any time I visit home and go up there. I think getting a tanker mission again along with the airmen to go with it would be a great boost to eastern NDs communities and economy. The city isn't doing too bad but it would only help it grow further. Hoping Sen. Hoeven continues to push for the base to get them.
