I couldn't get the article to open, so I will go with what I know.
As someone who is half Chinese, this saddens me. There is and always has been a cultural bias against female babies. This is because males have been seen to be more "valuable" due to the fact that they had more ability to work, or employability. In earlier times, girl babies were simply thrown in the nearest river, discarded like so much trash. The modern one child policy only strengthened the culutral prejudice against female babies, so they were aborted or otherwise disposed of in favor of male children.
Fast forward a few decades and China now finds itself being one huge nationwide "Sausage Party" where men greatly outnumber women. This has serious cultural implications, as a smaller female population means less reproduction (obviously). Yes, the population will decrease, but so will the Chinese culture. I say this because either Chinese men will seek mates outside China, or "import" foreign women. Now I realize the idea of "racial purity" is a taboo subject in Western Europe and America, but this imbalance in male to female population will dilute the "pure" Chinese civilization. I won't get into whether that is a "good" or "bad" thing, as that's something that the Chinese will have to figure out.
I was "encouraged" to find a nice Chinese girl, but despite all the contact I had with Chinese culture (in NYC's Chinatown and my grandmother's involvement with Chinese Opera) I was never exposed to any nice Chinese girls in my age range. It's ironic that all the first generation children born in America on my mom's side all went out and found American/European spouses.
