I believe Sherman looked at the earlier Grierson Raid and improved upon the performance by enlarging the scale of units involved. Where Grierson's raid was 1700 Cavalry, Sherman upped the ante and invaded with some 28 thousand. IMO, he was the most brilliant tactical and strategic military mind of the Civil War.
