My grandfather was a a policeman, my father a state trooper for 38 years, my brother a deputy sheriff for 30 some years. My father retired in 1991. He said he would not recommend law enforcement to anyone. Why, he said declining respect for the law. My brother retired a year ago, earlier than he planned. Why, people trying to push law enforcement over the edge, wanting them to screw up. No support from the public, making him feel always on edge. So who is at fault, the underpaid law enforcement officer or the public that sees the LEO as an enemy??

SPC Erich Guenther where’s the money for that going to come from? Agencies across the country are already severely short handed because of money. Now they’re supposed to pull bags of cash out of their backsides for more officers plus more training?

SSG (Join to see) - You either pay the piper or live with the consequences of not paying the piper. Though I would say a Federal or State funded force might be a LOT cheaper than a local force as every fricken PD would not need it's own SWAT Department and other indulgences. THere would be savings on economies of scale as well with purchases of uniforms and patrol cars (standardization of specs). As well as cheaper to insure provide healthcare for (larger pool of employees).

SPC Erich Guenther so take the authority away from municipalities to conduct their own business as they see fit? Why not just do away with municipalities all together and just break down everything into districts and blocks? We can build fences between them all and not allow much movement between them. And any movement that is allowed can be heavily monitored.

SSG (Join to see) - Oh I think your taking things way to extremes. This has actually happened in small communities that no longer can afford a police force. They either contract with the County or State Patrol for police protection and nobody went goosestepping through the small community with a swastika flag. Everyone lived happily ever after and the small city saved a lot of money by eliminating their police force out of their respective budget without a spike in crime.

I don't know how many police you've been around during a running gun battle, but who's to say that police today DO NOT already exhibit the discipline of soldiers at war?

I would disagree, the easy answer is to hire more cops and insist on recurring training with the cops that patrol the streets and deal with the public. That would fix a large part of the problem, in my view. Problem is that the police are locally funded and superivized versus Federally Funded and Supervised as they are in other countries where there are far less shootings and far more professionalism in the Police force.
