Sick US teacher has to pay for substitute

Saw this on the news the other night, that is just wrong.

Wow that is horrible, but I am not surprised. Most jobs even union supported ones you get so much sick time that is paid. After that you go unpaid and you have to file FMLA to protect your position. The article doesn’t list much information such as if she is wanting her salary she has to pay for a sub or to keep her job she needs to pay a substitute.

I would think paying a substitute would be the responsibility of the school district since they are collecting taxes for such things. I wouldn’t think that responsibility should fall on the teacher who is out. I wonder if her coworkers in the union are able to donate sick leave to her so she can be paid while undergoing her treatments? It’s because of horror stories like this I pay those premiums for short term disability insurance. Sure it’s not a lot of money, but life is cruel and hard and you never know what can happen and the bill collectors do not care why you can’t pay them.
