Another astonishing Englishman of the Victorian Era, Richard Burton was tarred early by hints of homosexuality but went on to have a career such that being the first translator of "1001 Nights" is merely a footnote. He was played by Patrick Bergin in the movie Mountains of the Moon which covers the discovery of Lake Tanganyika.

I saw it years ago and remember it as seeming accurate, but rather dull. But, like I said, years ago. Reading his translation of "1001 Nights" gives a feel for something not much acknowledged these days, the the massive amount of African slavery in the Middle East in the era of the Caliphs as well as the deep racism felt by the Arabs to the Africans at that time.
