https://www.fema.gov/mission-areasHurricane Harvey was first identified by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) as a tropical wave, just off the East Coast of Africa on August 13. The NHC continued to monitor the wave through the next four to five days as it tracked westward across the Atlantic Ocean. Sufficient thunderstorm activity associated with the wave slowly organized and a low level circulation center was identified on satellite imagery on August 17 prompting the NHC to begin issuing advisories on a potential tropical cyclone.
Making its landfall in Texas on August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey became the second costliest natural disaster in United States history. Unprecedented amounts of rainfall, which were recorded across broad sections of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana, caused catastrophic flooding with far reaching impacts on several sectors of the economy. Total economic losses were in the vicinity of USD100 billion, while public and private insurers bore 30 percent of the cost.
In the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017, the SBA approved more than 132,000 low-interest disaster loans for a total of $6.8 billion. While the SBA will always be ready to assist businesses, homeowners and renters after a declared disaster, having a preparedness plan in place will go a long way toward keeping your organization intact while supporting the long-term recovery of your community.
