Websites vs Social Media? Apples vs Oranges. Your website is your storefront. It's a great place to exhibit your services and wares, or just your thoughts. However, like any brick and mortar store, it's only as good as their exposure (traffic in retail parlance). That's where social media comes in. It can drive traffic to your "store". When I first got in the business of hosting my own website/weblog, I studied it carefully. I measured traffic (reading my server logs and an analytics tool, such as Google Analytics). Then I played with social media and tested the results. I've shared some of my findings in by weblog under the subject "Blogging" and provided a link here. Not all postings in this category relate to traffic. You'll have to scan to find those. Recently, in the past couple of years, I stopped promoting my website and, as expected, traffic dropped significantly. I had stopped writing (my product) to work on my voice/style and didn't want to keep disappointing readers. That seems counterproductive. My Page Rank dropped from 4 or 5 to Zero. Then, to my surprise, it began rising to "1" just last year. I had to look to see what was driving new traffic. It was RallyPoint. It drives more new traffic to my website/weblog than do Twitter (which I stopped using altogether and now allow others to do the job for me) and Facebook or Instagram. Interesting, isn't it?
