This is an example of how soldiers can sometimes do really stupid stuff: I was a medic assigned to a Combat Support Hospital in a 2-hospital compound at Med Center West during the First Gulf War. I had guard duty one day, while the ground war was still ongoing when a Humvee approached our post. We had heard rumors that some Iraqi soldiers had stolen some vehicles from a depot nearby. Shortly after I got to the guard bunker a Humvee was spotted approaching us. I had a pair of binoculars and when I focused in on the Hummer the people inside were wearing the local dress of a long white robe and the traditional red and white headdress. The other two guards and I all chambered rounds and were prepared to open fire if they didn't stop. Fortunately they DID stop, because it turned out that they were actually a couple of our own COOKS! They had bought the garb at KKMC and thought it would be funny to come back to base wearing it. They were NOT laughing when I shoved my M-16A1 in the driver's face.
