During the surge in Iraq most Army units were doing twelve month tours but a few got the extra months added so the power that be could manage troop strength. I was at Al Assad Air Base and there were a few "bear patch" troops there from a transportation company.. Some of the young soldiers had enlisted for U.S. Army Alaska as an enlistment option believing that would keep them out of Iraq or Afghanistan. Imagine the surprise when their unit was deployed just like the CONUS units!
