Soldiers Honored for Stopping Suicide Attempt

"Two soldiers have received immediate promotions – akin to those awarded on the battlefield – for stopping a comrade from committing suicide by hanging. The two – Privates Second Class Carlos Fontanez and Ari Till – are attached to A Battery, 1st Battalion, 19th Field Artillery. They were undergoing their third week of basic combat training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, when the incident occurred.

“They saw something wrong, and they stepped up,” said Capt. Bianca Huntsman, commander of their unit. The soldier who tried to commit suicide is now “doing well” at a medical facility, Huntsman said."
