I'm surprised that the article didn't mention the anticipated switch between magnetic north and south poles which has happened in the past, and related the "shift" to that anticipated event.

True, geologist have known for about 100 years that the poles have shifted between north and south about every 200,000 years, we are due for a shift. Now no one knows how this or exactly when this will happen or how it will affect the planet, ie animals that use the magnetic field such as migratory animals or even the climate.
