How about the Second Armada? The combined French and Spanish Armada that sailed against England after John Paul Jones circumnavigated the island of Great Britain attacking and pillaging at will, thus demonstrating that Englands "Oaken Shield" (its navy) was ineffective. It too was a failure, but ended in the battle between the American Bon Homme Richard and the British Serapis in sight of spectators on the shore. When Jones took the Serapis back to France as his prize (the Richard was sunk), the British people had enough and petitioned Parliament to end the Revolutionary War and allow America to be born. Why isn't this taught as well in our schools?
