Sgt Wayne Wood Seeing the launching of a ship that large would be fun. There must be a big splash!

Does anyone wonder why some ships are slid off the ‘ways’ for launching and others enter the water sideways?

Sideways launching means you don't have to have a wider deeper channel for the ship and the extra runout. Bummer is you tie up more waterfront real estate building the thing. It used to be more expensive to launch sideways (early 1900s) but it's more a matter of site constraints nowadays.
