I feel like there should be a solution to these abandoned sites, a way to make these places useful without costing way more than what taxpayers have to cover for maintenance. Knowing practically nothing about real estate, or a way of getting a group together to take on something like this, I'm having a hard time coming up with that solution on my own.

Would require massive changes to the system as we know it IMO. Places like this would never be abandoned in the first place.

I know this is going to sound ignorant, but: What's IMO?

*The Don Cesar*

And a good story —-> following service as a hospital during WWII and subsequent use (and abandonment) by the VA - it has been restored to its former glory. Our favorite place to stay on the Gulf. Great history (link).
