1968???? From your description, it sounds like you are actually referring to the original series pilot, "The Cage". But that was 1964/65, not 1968. It featured Jeffery Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike and Majel Barrett as "Number One". It was deemed "too cerebral" by NBC executives, but was so well done that they took the unprecedented step of commissioning a second pilot. Unfortunately for Jeff Hunter, he was no longer available, having gotten a large movie deal (if memory serves correctly) and Roddenberry cast Bill Shatner (whom, like Leonard Nimoy, he had worked with in previous projects) in the lead role, now named James Kirk. I am guessing that the 1968 date you mentioned comes from the use of a vast majority of the footage from "The Cage" being used in the two-part second season episode "The Menagerie". Interestingly, this second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", showed Kirk's middle name to start with an "R" rather than the later "T" that is generally more well known.
Yes, I am a Trekkie. How can I not be, the show ( in its broadcast form) and I are the same age, both "born" in 1966. I blame my mother who put my crib too close to the TV.

LTC (Join to see) Everyone has their reservoirs of useless knowledge, Star Trek trivia just happens to be mine. It's been an absolute joy to hang out with some of the cast members from the various incarnations and listen to their stories. One of my best memories was 8 years ago when Leonard Nimoy put his arms around me, despite my having just come in from the heat, dripping sweat, hugged me like a brother and took a picture with me. As long as I live, I'll never forget that... and Spock isn't even my favorite character... not that I'd ever tell him that. :-)

The pilot episode "The Cage" actually starred Majel Barrett-Roddenberry as "Number One," and Jeffrey Hunter's character, Captain Pike, has been worked into both the original and the JJ remakes very well.

Just a point of order, she was not, at the time of filming, married to Roddenberry. Indeed, it was not until 1969 that Barrett and Roddenberry would wed.
