I had to go back and read the 1st part to completely understand the project. The only part that made me go, "Uggg," was the Western Digital HDD. (The only thing I'll use from WD is their external SSD drives.) I understand that you were going for affordable.

As a nerdy project I give you top marks. I too have wanted to play with the Raspberry Pi for some time. Since BitCoin mining is a futile endeavor these days, I want a better use of the Pi before I get to playing. One thing I've been waiting for is to see if they incorporate a chip onto the boards that you can flash the OS you want on it - leaving the SD card slot to be used as a "swappable" hard drive bay. I'd love to see the return of DOS, or something like it which will run 32bit and 64bit programs from the prompt. Even if the flashed OS has to include something like Super Shell for the nimrods who can't figure what a command prompt is.

Barry Davidson YOu might want to take a look at the Odroid line. They can boot from an EMMC and they have provisions for a MicroSD card.

SSgt Mark Lines - Thank goodness I have an M2 to SATA reader. It only took ordering 4 different ones from different companies to get one that was actually an M2 reader.
