The story and its inflammatory headline lack context. The original statement was in response to a question about whites in America someday becoming the majority/minority i.e. the largest racial group but a minority when the other racial groups are combined. Representative King was attempting to point out the unlikelihood that, in the future, Blacks and Hispanics would have a Kumbaya Moment and come together as a voting block to "take down" the white majority. The question assumes that Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics vote in some kind of tribal block and that just doesn't happen. The reality is that people regardless of color tend to vote based on economic and social issues. I would say that stupid misleading questions often get stupid answers that can be used by a confrontational press to make anyone look bad.

If he gets voted out, I will agree with your conclusion about publicity.

However, if this most recent election taught us anything, it is that there really is no such thing as bad publicity. At least, not in politics.
